“As she and other Yeatsians know to their cost, the poet’s handwriting staggers across the page, as one critic has put it, like a mouse’s electrocardiogram, and his spelling is dramatically idiosyncratic: “leg” is likely to appear inexplicably as “legge”, “moral” confusingly as “morel” and “admirable” is texted into “admuribl”.”
