Netflix: The Killing

With the precision of a watchmaker, “The Killing” lays out each component of its ingenious racetrack heist in meticulous detail. Even in this low-budget potboiler, Stanley Kubrick displays a chilly perfection with the camera and a mastery of ominous lighting. The characters are skillfully developed and intriguing, and pulp master Jim Thompson’s dialogue displays both his usual seething misogyny and his brilliant understanding of human vices. And, because it wouldn’t be a cheap B-movie without it, there’s a hairy, chess-loving Russian wrestler tossing people around. Good stuff.
