In the course of her upcoming second exhibition at Metro Pictures, New York, Paulina Olowska shows paintings adapted from postcards of home knitting patterns from late communist-era Poland. Thus, “Applied Fantastic” continues Paulina Olowska’s engagement with communist Poland’s fascination with Western consumerism. The term “Applied Fantastic” was coined by Polish writer Leopold Tyrmand in 1954, describing the localized re-creations of Western styles.
